Good News for Patients in Washington, DC

Starting in January (2018) a new law goes into effect “To impose a limit on the amount that a person must pay in copayment or coinsurance through a health benefit plan for a prescription for a specialty drug”

In addition to cost protections, patients “shall have the right to request that a non-preferred drug be covered.” That is insurance cannot insist on changing the medication if the physician believes the patient needs the precise regimen required.

We should all have these same rights. Insurance should allow us to help share the cost of healthcare so we don’t burden the sickest members of society.
