Recently, I wrote to a friend who this year faced a daunting battle with cancer and a terrifying course of treatment. Now, with that behind him, I noted that new year’s is a personal milestone! He made it.
So as the calendar turns, I think of Don Wright and our eRace Cancer campaign who was given 3 years to live and 13 years later – with the help of new treatments – completed 100 marathons with cancer and 15 years later is aiming toward the Senior Games.
I think of Mike Levine who with pancreatic cancer entered the 2017 Ironman Championship and made it half way through.
I think of Andrew Schorr diagnosed with cancer more than 20 years ago, and he and his wife Esther run a wonderful organization called Patient Power to help other patients reach their full potential.
I think of Michael T with multiple myeloma, who – when I met him 10 years ago – just wanted to walk his little girl down the aisle, and now she’s engaged and he’s going strong.
THE OTHER SIDE
I think of Estelle and all our other friends who did not reach this new year’s eve. And I think of those who are still struggling.
So I think of my friends in research and biotech who are pursuing new treatments to make more milestones happen for more families. It’s up to us to continue the reasons for hope and the opportunities for optimism.
From all of us at IPR happy new year is an acknowledgment of struggles and achievements, of years gained and lives lost. And with that I say let’s welcome the dawn of another year
